We are proud to announce the expansion of our renewable natural gas (RNG) portfolio with the addition of Liberty RNG. Commercially in-service as of October 3, 2023, this state-of-the-art RNG plant is in Monticello, Indiana, and is designed to capture landfill gas from Liberty Landfill. The facility is expected to add approximately 1.5 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of RNG capacity annually.
“The demand for RNG continues to increase at an accelerating rate,” said Craig Moore, Chief Commercial Officer of Kinder Morgan RNG, “and having Liberty RNG come online enables us to further meet that growing demand while helping both the landfill and the RNG user reduce their carbon emissions.”
Liberty RNG is the second of three new RNG plants in service in Indiana.
Twin Bridges RNG, the first of the three, came online this past summer and adds approximately 1.5 Bcf of RNG capacity annually. The third RNG plant, Prairie View RNG, is located in Wyatt, Indiana and is expected to come online in the
near future. In total, these three RNG plants are projected to add approximately 3.9 Bcf of RNG capacity each year. When used as a transportation fuel, the RNG generated from these plants could displace approximately 28 million gallons of diesel a year, lowering greenhouse gas emissions by about 280,000 tons.
Methane, a large component of landfill biogas, is a greenhouse gas that is more than 28 times as potent as carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
1 Kinder Morgan RNG works with landfills to capture and
convert methane from biogas into RNG , renewable electricity or medium-Btu energy. Our vertically integrated approach enables us to connect with other organizations that want to use renewable energy in their daily activities to reduce their emissions as we continue to expand the supply of RNG.
