Operational Excellence 2008
Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P. (KMP) is a leading pipeline transportation and energy storage company in North America. We own an interest in or operate more than 26,000 miles of pipelines and 170 terminals. Our pipelines transport natural gas, gasoline, crude oil, CO2 and other products, and our terminals store petroleum products and chemicals and handle bulk materials like coal and petroleum coke. We are also the leading provider of CO2 for enhanced oil recovery projects in North America.
We are dedicated to being a good corporate citizen and committed to operating our assets safely, protecting the public, employees and contractors, and the environment. The following highlights some of our achievements in 2008.
- Kinder Morgan continued to outperform nearly all industry averages relative to safety and environmental performance measures. Because we are committed to transparency, we publish our operational performance data on our web site.
- We implemented an enhanced right-of-way protection program in each of our pipeline businesses.
- Kinder Morgan ranked #1 in the Pipeline category in Fortune magazine’s America’s Most Admired Companies and #1 among all industries for quality of management.
- The redesigned and updated public awareness section of our web site helps various stakeholder groups understand our pipeline operations and heightens safety awareness.
- Our Yates Field in Texas received the Occupational Safety & Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Program Star of Excellence Award. This award is given to sites that maintain an incident rate 90 percent below the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ average.
- Kinder Morgan Canada received the 2008 Operators Award at the 7th International Pipeline Conference held in Calgary. This award is presented to a pipeline operator that effectively integrates technology, personnel, safety and regulations in its pipeline operations.
- Kinder Morgan began transporting commercial batches of denatured ethanol in our Central Florida Pipeline between Tampa and Orlando, Fla., making it the first transmarket gasoline pipeline in the United States to do so. We plan to invest over $90 million to add or expand ethanol and biodiesel service at various facilities across the country.
- Arizona’s Maricopa County named employees at our Phoenix terminal to its Air Quality Honor Roll. The county recognized the terminal for receiving zero violations and having all of its records in perfect order during an inspection.
- Kinder Morgan’s air quality group reduced emissions from equipment during construction at the Colton products pipeline terminal in California. Equipment was chosen that used clean-burning fuel such as natural gas, power poles were added for electricity rather than using gas or diesel generators and trucks were promptly offloaded to prevent them from idling for longer than five minutes.
- We upgraded the vapor recovery system at our terminal in Burnaby, British Columbia, where petroleum products are handled. The environmentally friendly, state-of-the-art technology is expected to reduce odors in the area.
- Our Globalplex terminal in Reserve, La., hosted a tour for several analysts from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. The agency supports the military and policymakers concerning issues of national security by understanding industrial operations, like ours, through analysis of aerial photographs and commercial imagery.
- The Houston Business Journal recognized Kinder Morgan as one of the Best Places to Work in Houston. Winners are chosen based on employees’ responses to a questionnaire about trust in senior leaders, feeling valued and more.
- The Wildlife Habitat Council honored us for our role in wildlife habitat preservation and conservation education. The Stoney Creek Restoration Site in Burnaby, British Columbia, Discovery Green in Houston, Texas, and the Reno/Sparks Terminal in Nevada received international recognition at the organization’s 20th annual symposium. The Holt Release Site, which is along our right-of-way in central California, received Wildlife at Work certification.
- Experts deemed the 10-year restoration of 180 miles of right-of-way along our Express Pipeline in southwestern Alberta a success. The group, which included representatives from the National Energy Board, Alberta Environment, Alberta Sustainable Development, Alberta Wilderness Association, Alberta Native Plant Council and the University of Calgary, spent three days touring the area.
- Over 50 volunteers from our Lakewood, Colo., office helped with reforestation efforts in an area of the Pike National Forest destroyed by a major wildfire in 2002. The group planted more than 2,300 ponderosa pine seedlings over 35 acres.
- Our Westridge terminal in British Columbia and the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans have partnered in a program that helps hatchery raised salmon acclimate to an ocean environment before they are released into the wild. For 10 days each spring, fish are held in a pen at the terminal where employees feed them and document their activity.
- The Kinder Morgan Foundation supported students enrolled in energy-related programs by donating to scholarship funds at certain technical colleges. Students are earning degrees in programs such as process technology, instrumentation and corrosion.
