Kinder Morgan Canada's President partners with Tsawwassen First Nation Chief for leadership exchange

On January 26, 2011, the Industry Council for Aboriginal Business (ICAB) held a reception and DVD launch to celebrate the first anniversary of the new Leadership Exchange Program. A first in Canada, the exchange was piloted in the fall of 2009 by ICAB and the Learning Strategies Group at Simon Fraser University. The 2009/2010 program involved six Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal leaders who were paired up to experience each other's corporate and communal worlds firsthand.

Kinder Morgan Canada's (KMC) President Ian Anderson and his partner Chief Kim Baird of B.C.'s Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) spent six days over the course of several months in their respective environments. Through the exchange, Ian gained a better appreciation of the differences that exist between industry and Aboriginal approaches to commercial discussions, as well as TFN's focus on translating its commercial and industrial opportunities into education, employment, and social value for the community. In turn, Chief Baird learned about the pipeline industry and KMC's operations. She enhanced her knowledge of business decision making, which would help her identify the alignment of interests when dealing with business in the future.

The relationship established between Ian and Kim has evolved to include a closer working relationship between KMC and TFN employees. In particular, KMC and TFN signed a two-way secondment agreement that will provide both TFN and KMC with ongoing access to each other's employee experience and expertise in relevant areas, as a means to building and developing capacity within the TFN community and KMC.
